Kitty Calling: Cat Championship & Show this Weekend

From the Gothamist 10/15/08 - It's that time of year again: The CFA-Iams Cat Championship is this Saturday and Sunday at Madison Square Garden. As many cats' fur is combed carefully into place, hundreds of cats will be competing for Best of Breed and Best of the Best honors. There's also the Parade of Breeds, where judges will explain the different Cat Fanciers' Association breeds, like the Norwegian Forest cat (a heavy coat) and the Abyssinian (gorgeous colors). Hundreds of cats in need of a home from various shelter will be there too at the adoption event--we met a few today, and Marley, Lucy and Sebastian would be super sweet additions to any home!

A new addition: The Iams Trained Cats. According to the press release, these cats, who have appeared in Iams commercials, will be "slam-dunking, strutting on a balance beam and kicking off the show by lighting a torch." It's unclear if they'll be casting feline votes for two feline standing in for the presidential candidates--there will be a Bombay cat named Barack Obama and an American Shorthair named John McCain. There's also the Feline Agility Competition (three words: cat obstacle course), which regular cats can enter too.

Look for insane cat names amongst the feline contestants, including: "Sir Lix-a-lot, Fuzzy Foot Confetti of Daydream, and Snoop Kitty Kitty" more cat photos
